Hi Andy, Thanks for this video, it was really clarifying for me in terms of the reason for creating the dis-rapport.
I was surprised by your stance on addiction. I am very much in the Gabor Mate school of thought that addiction is symptomatic of a deeper issue, a relief from unwanted feelings. I’m wondering if people come looking for help with addiction they are really looking for help dealing with the underlying condition. I don’t have lived experience of substance addiction but I do of behavioural addictions – both my own and others around, in particular my dad, who was very much addicted to martial arts and subsequently (as he couldn’t control his anger) Christianity (which allowed him to justify and focus his anger on the worshippers of false gods). I found Metaphors of Movement on myself to be incredibly helpful for getting underneath my cravings. Not suggesting you should change your position obviously, just an observation of how I think MoM can get to the root the addictive patterning.
On the topic that Lisa raised, I found this very interesting. I have recently been wondering about neuro-divergence being a reflection of the environmental conditions. This aligns fairly well with your commentary on Schizophrenia and social conditions that support it. As an example, could Attention Deficit Disorder actually be the disorder that is a response to Attention Deficit from primary care givers?
I’m not convinced neurodivergence is even a thing other than a current trend/fad for relabelling and pathologising everything. In any population a diverse spread of abilities is needed for a successful society, as Rory Suthrland suggest divergent is an essential feature, not a quirk.
