About The Metaphor Society

“A picture held us captive. And we could not get outside it, for it lay in our language and language seemed to repeat it to us inexorably.“

The Metaphor Society originally grew from Andrew T. Austin’s work in the therapeutic exploration of metaphor. Since then, it has developed into a much broader community, exploring metaphor across psychology, communication, philosophy, symbolism, storytelling, culture, embodied cognition, personal development and everyday life.

At the heart of Metaphors of Movement lies The Metaphor Society, a vibrant and welcoming global community for exploration, connection and shared study. It is open to everyone, regardless of professional background, previous experience or level of knowledge.

Members can take part in regular online meetings, hear from guest speakers, explore new ideas and connect with others who share an interest in the many ways metaphor shapes thought, behaviour, relationships and experience.

As a member, you gain access to:

  • Regular live online meetings
  • Exclusive webinars and workshops
  • Presentations from invited guest speakers
  • Past session recordings and Q&A archives
  • A rich library of articles, tools and learning resources
  • A network of like-minded practitioners, researchers and learners

The Society supports ongoing learning, thoughtful discussion, peer collaboration and the practical application of metaphor-based insight.
