The Reluctant Gift

By

Claire

I am at a family gathering in a garden. People are talking and enjoying themselves, but I am standing off to the side. A family member walks toward me. His face is completely expressionless.

He stops in front of me and hands me a small gift. He doesn’t say a single word. As he gives me the gift, I sense that other people are watching. I hold the gift, but I do not open it. He does not explain what it is, and I do not ask.

… and then in reality, dogs bark and I wake up from the dream.

n your dream you are in a familiar family position. It is a natural and homely gathering and looks enjoyable, yet despite its familiarity you appear to be a bit of an outsider.

You are certainly included in this family situation and are approachable, certainly on a one to one basis, yet there is no actual expression shared here. It all looks rather blank and impossible to read.

You appear to have been gifted something that is the right size for you to hold. Although you describe it as a gift there is no information exchanged to confirm this. It all appears to be something of a guessing game. It appears you are seen but not heard in this position.

There is no attempt from you to unwrap this gift to see what is beneath the surface. Really no meaningful exchange between all. Despite you being on the receiving end here, there is really no obvious input or output going on.

It reminds me of the Simon and Garfunkel song The Sound of Silence
